Where to stay around Daylesford
Daylesford and Hepburn Springs sit a few minutes apart in the hills of central Victoria, surrounded by forest, farmland and old gold-rush villages. Where you stay shapes the weekend: whether you walk to dinner or drive, whether you hear the town or the birds. Here’s how the area breaks down.
Daylesford town
Stay in town and you can leave the car parked all weekend. Vincent Street has the cafés, bakeries, bookshops, galleries and restaurants, and most of town is walkable. Weekends are busy and lively. Midweek is quiet.
Around the lake. Lake Daylesford is just down the hill from Vincent Street. The walking track loops right around it, past mineral springs and cafés on the water, and the Tipperary Track follows the creek to Hepburn Springs. See lakefront stays and our Lake Daylesford guide.
Wombat Hill and the streets around it. Above town, the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens have big old trees, a lookout tower and views across the district. The streets below are full of miners’ cottages and old weatherboards, a few minutes’ walk from the shops.
Hepburn Springs
Hepburn Springs is Daylesford’s quieter neighbour, about five minutes up the road. This is spa country proper: the Hepburn Bathhouse, the Mineral Springs Reserve with its free mineral water pumps, and day spas tucked among the trees. The streets are leafy, the houses often older and more rambling, and the village has a general store, cafés and the Palais. Read our Hepburn Springs guide, or see wellness and spa weekend stays.
Trentham
Trentham is a pretty village about 20 minutes east, with a historic main street, a much-loved pub, good food and Trentham Falls just outside town. It’s cooler and greener, and a lovely base if you want something slower. See our Trentham guide.
Out in the countryside
In the countryside around Daylesford, around places like Musk and Mount Franklin, the stays get further apart and the nights get darker and quieter. This is where you’ll find farmhouses, cabins in the bush and places with paddocks, animals and big skies. You’ll want a car, and you’ll be ten or fifteen minutes from town. See farm stays.
Further afield
A few of our stays sit further out, towards the Macedon Ranges and the towns along the Calder. They’re handy for the wineries, Hanging Rock and the towns along the Calder, and still within easy reach of Daylesford. Each listing’s map shows exactly where it is.
Stays for every kind of trip
A couples weekend
Daylesford has been Victoria’s romantic escape for a long time. For two, look for a cottage or studio with a spa bath, an open fire and a short walk to dinner. Start with couples escapes, spa bath stays and stays with an indoor fireplace.
Family holidays
Families do well with a house with a yard and a couple of bedrooms, close to the lake or the playgrounds in town. In summer, a pool keeps everyone happy. See 3-bedroom and 4-bedroom stays, and stays with a pool.
Friends and groups
For a birthday, a reunion or a weekend with friends, we have big country houses with several bedrooms and bathrooms, long tables and room to spread out. See group accommodation and 5+ bedroom stays. For something larger, such as a wedding, see weddings and events.
Bringing the dog
Plenty of our homes welcome pets, many with fenced yards. Daylesford is a dog-friendly town, with forest walks and cafés with water bowls out the front. See pet-friendly stays.
A wellness break
Daylesford is the spa capital of Victoria. Come for the bathhouse, a massage and long slow mornings. Our wellness and spa weekend page lists the stays closest to the spas, along with the places worth booking.
A country escape
Want paddocks, quiet and the stars? A farm stay or a house on acreage gives you all of that, with a firepit for the evenings.
Choosing the right place
How many bedrooms?
Our stays range from studios for two to houses with five bedrooms or more. A quick guide: a studio or 1-bedroom suits a couple, 2 bedrooms suits two couples or a small family, and 3 or 4 bedrooms suits families and groups of friends. Each listing shows the beds and the maximum number of guests.
Spa bath or bathhouse?
They’re different things. A spa bath is in your own accommodation, for a soak whenever you like. A wellness and spa weekend is about the bathhouses and day spas around town. Many guests do both.
Fires and firepits
Most of our indoor fireplace stays have open wood fires, the real thing. Each listing has the details. Some have an outdoor firepit as well, for marshmallows under the stars.
Outdoor space
A deck, a garden or a terrace makes a big difference in spring and summer.
Driving electric
Some stays have a charger on site. See stays with an EV charger.
New to the collection
We add new homes regularly. See what’s just listed.
When to come
Daylesford has four real seasons, and each one is a reason to visit.
Winter (June to August)
The classic Daylesford season. Cold, misty mornings, open fires, red wine and a long soak. Fireplace stays book out early for winter weekends, so book ahead.
Spring (September to November)
Blossom, gardens and lambs in the paddocks. Spring brings the wine festivals and the Daylesford Show, and long weekends fill fast.
Summer (December to February)
Warm days and cool nights. Swim in the lake, eat outside, and look for a stay with a pool or a big deck. Summer evenings in the hills are noticeably cooler than Melbourne.
Autumn (March to May)
Many locals’ favourite. The gardens turn gold and red, the days are still and clear, and the first fires get lit. Autumn starts with ChillOut, Australia’s biggest regional pride festival, on the Labour Day long weekend.
Festivals and events
From ChillOut in March to the Budburst Wine Festival, Words in Winter and the weekly markets, there’s always something on. See What’s On for the full calendar. For festival weekends and long weekends, guests often book five to seven months ahead.
Planning your stay
Getting here
Daylesford is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Melbourne by car, via the Calder Freeway or the Western Freeway through Ballan. Without a car, take the V/Line train to Woodend or Ballarat and connect to a coach to Daylesford. Allow about two hours. Check the V/Line timetable before you travel, especially on weekends.
Getting around
If you’re staying in town, you can walk to most things. For Hepburn Springs, the Tipperary Track walking trail links the two. Out of town, you’ll need a car. Taxis are limited, so book ahead for nights out.
Eat, soak and explore
Once you’re here, our local guides cover where to eat and drink, where to soak and relax, and what to see and do. Each property page also lists the places nearby. For weekend ideas, read the Journal.
